Activity Summary:

One of the nurses' main tasks is providing excellent community services. Excellent service aims to help the public through the best possible means, delivering results exceeding expectations. However, reality shows that the public often views nursing services as disappointing, with negative reactions expressed through cynical remarks such as "the nurse is rude, slow, and insensitive" and similar expressions.

The rapid advancement of information and communication technology has made access to information nearly universal, even in remote areas. Consequently, the public, becoming more informed, is increasingly critical of service providers' performance. Members of society often express dissatisfaction with the services provided, especially when it comes to services that affect the wider community.

The weakness of nursing human resources (HR) competencies often hinders efforts to improve the quality of nursing services. Therefore, there is a need to improve the competence of these resources to deliver excellent service. This can be achieved through various approaches, both formal and informal. The formal approach involves a learning process designed and implemented through training.

To address these issues, the Faculty of Nursing has contributed through a community service activity titled: Strengthening the Role of Nurses in Nursing Care Services Based on Excellent Services Training at the Universitas Sumatera Utara Educational Hospital, Medan.

The event was held on Friday, May 25, 2018, in the Skill Lab Room at Universitas Sumatera Utara Educational Hospital to involve participating nurses. The methods used included lectures, discussions, and Q&A sessions, led by Ns. Roymond H. Simamora, M.Kep.

The first topic, "The Basics of Excellent Nursing Services," was presented by Ns. Nurbaiti, S.Kep., M.Biomed. The second topic, "Interprofessional Collaboration in Care," was presented by Mrs. Evi Carota Bukit, S.Kp., MNS. The third topic, "Coaching in Nursing Services," was delivered by Mrs. Jenni Marlindawani, S.Kp., MNS, Ph.D.

This activity is expected to significantly benefit the partners (USU Educational Hospital), particularly by fostering assertiveness in nurses when providing care. It also aims to increase nurse job satisfaction, leading to more positive responses from patients toward nursing services and boosting the number of patients at the USU Educational Hospital.

Ultimately, this initiative is designed to demonstrate the performance of Indonesian nurses in providing quality nursing care according to their professional capacities in various situations and conditions. This aligns to ensure that nurses are "the right person with the right skill in the right job at the right place," thereby contributing to achieving healthcare service goals.
