Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the best approach to using the latest evidence to guide healthcare decision-making and patient values. Therefore, three essential components are needed to implement EBP: clinical expertise, the latest research on specific issues, and the client/patient perspective. To implement EBP, several crucial steps must be followed: formulating questions, finding information/evidence to answer the questions, critically assessing the information/evidence, integrating the assessed evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences, and evaluation.
In nursing, EBP involves gathering data, processing it, and applying research results to improve clinical practice, the work environment, or patient outcomes. Using EBP in clinical nursing practice greatly aids nurses in providing the highest-quality and most efficient patient care. Thus, care based on the EBP approach has improved patient safety and nursing care outcomes.
Nursing care is a continuous process of assessing and evaluating patients. In this process, nurses and patients, or nurses with families and other healthcare professionals, are involved. As one of the professions in care services, nurses perform assessments, establish nursing diagnoses, provide interventions, and evaluate each intervention. Therefore, an EBP approach is needed to enhance the role of nurses in nursing care services and improve patient outcomes as the final result of care.
Nurses must possess certain expertise when caring for patients with various needs. In addition to requiring a specific level of education, nurses are also expected to demonstrate caring in every aspect of nursing care. Caring is a core value of nursing that requires critical thinking in its application. Critical thinking is a key component in building care with the EBP approach. Therefore, integrating caring into nursing care with the EBP approach is essential to improving the quality of care.
