The Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FKEP USU), provided new students with an introduction to Indonesia’s higher education system as part of the 2026 Introduction to Campus Life for New Students (PKKMB USU). The session was delivered by Dr. Siti Zahara Nasution, S.Kp., MNS., on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m. WIB. During the session, FKEP USU students gained an understanding of the higher education system, study program curricula, the implementation of the Impactful Campus initiative, character development and growth mindset, mental health, student organizations, the prevention and handling of violence in higher education, as well as financial literacy and student well-being. The session provided new students with essential knowledge to understand the academic environment and pursue higher education responsibly.
In her presentation, Dr. Siti Zahara explained that higher education is not merely oriented toward completing coursework but is aimed at developing adaptive graduates with competencies relevant to the needs of the workforce and global competitiveness. Students were introduced to the implementation of Outcome-Based Education (OBE), which emphasizes Graduate Learning Outcomes (CPL), Course Learning Outcomes (CPMK), as well as continuous evaluation and quality improvement. The Impactful Campus concept also positions education, research, and community service as an integrated effort to develop solutions to real-world challenges through collaboration with government, industry, and communities.
Beyond academic competencies, FKEP USU students were also encouraged to develop a growth mindset—the belief that abilities can continue to improve through effort, learning, experience, and the courage to face challenges. Character development was promoted through values such as empathy, tolerance, integrity, independence, perseverance, and the principles of Pancasila. The session also highlighted mental health as a foundation for academic success, considering that students may face academic pressure, anxiety about the future, loneliness, unhealthy digital media habits, and difficulties in managing their time.
The session supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, through the provision of quality higher education, competency development, outcome-based learning, and student character development. Attention to mental health also contributes to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, while strengthening competencies and preparing graduates for the workforce supports SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
Through this session, FKEP USU students are expected to develop into future healthcare professionals who are not only academically and professionally competent but also adaptive, ethical, mentally healthy, and capable of making meaningful contributions to society and sustainable development.
