Students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FKEP USU), participated in a character-building session as part of the 2026 USU Campus Life Orientation Program for New Students (PKKMB) on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, from 2:00 to 2:30 p.m. WIB. The session was delivered by Dr. Wardiyah Daulay, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., under the topic “BINTANG Character: Becoming a USU Student with Integrity, Resilience, and Wisdom.” The session strengthened students’ understanding of campus culture and ethics, etiquette and academic norms, anti-plagiarism, anti-drug abuse, anti-corruption, anti-terrorism, as well as responsible communication skills on social media.
In her presentation, Dr. Wardiyah emphasized the importance of BINTANG Character, which reflects the values of devotion to God Almighty, innovation grounded in integrity, resilience, and wisdom. Students are expected not only to develop academic competence but also to build character through consistent choices and actions that eventually become positive habits. Integrity is demonstrated through honesty, responsibility, refraining from cheating or falsifying data, and fulfilling responsibilities in both individual and group assignments. Meanwhile, resilience is reflected in the ability to recover from failure, while wisdom is demonstrated through the ability to think carefully and make sound decisions.
The session also encouraged FKEP USU students to understand that freedom in higher education always comes with responsibility. Student ethics are reflected in showing respect toward lecturers, administrative staff, and fellow students; communicating appropriately in classrooms and on social media; complying with regulations; and maintaining the good reputation of the university. Academic integrity was emphasized through the importance of working independently, acknowledging sources, being transparent, and remaining open to evaluation. Students were also reminded to avoid practices that undermine integrity, including proxy attendance, plagiarism, data manipulation, bullying, hate speech, and drug abuse.
The strengthening of BINTANG Character values is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, through education that develops not only academic competence but also students’ character, ethics, and integrity. Efforts to prevent drug abuse support SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, while fostering an anti-corruption, anti-plagiarism, anti-violence, and responsible culture is relevant to SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. Through this session, FKEP USU students are expected to grow into future healthcare professionals who are not only competent but also possess strong character, are trustworthy, resilient in facing challenges, and wise in contributing to society and sustainable development.
