Maternity and Pediatric Nursing Department

Department Definition

Maternity nursing is a branch of nursing science that studies professional nursing services devoted to women of childbearing age, pregnant women, childbirth, and the provision of services related to reproductive health. Pediatric nursing is a branch of science that focuses on the welfare of children and is oriented towards efforts to prevent disease and improve the health status of children.

History of the Department

  • The Maternity - Child Nursing Department is a combination of two nursing sections, namely maternity nursing and pediatric nursing. Since 1999 the Maternity - Child Department has been formed under the auspices of the Nursing Study Program (PSIK) FK USU, the name of the department is called the Maternity - Child nursing section.
  • In 2010 PSIK was separated from the Faculty of Medicine and stood alone as a faculty called the Faculty of Nursing, so from this time the section changed to the Maternity - Child Nursing Department.

Vision of Maternity Nursing

To become one of the leading departments/sections at the USU Faculty of Nursing that is able to produce graduates with national/international competence to carry out maternity nursing care with the scope of reproductive health of women and families both in physiological and pathological conditions based on holistic care in north sumatra.

Mission of Maternity Nursing

  1. Apply a competency-based teaching process based on holistic care.
  2. Implement Human Resources development with a sustainable system.
  3. Provide facilities and infrastructure that support maternity nursing education.
  4. Implementing a quality maternity nursing clinical learning process with a direct approach to patients and families (Bed Side Teaching) based on holistic care.
  5. Improving scientific development through research and community service in the scope of maternity nursing based on holistic care.
  6. Develop partnerships with other professionals to provide quality maternity nursing services.

Goals of Maternity Nursing

  1. Apply maternity nursing care in physiological and pathological cases in adolescents.
  2. Apply maternity nursing care to physiological and pathological cases in women of childbearing age (WUS).
  3. Apply maternity nursing care to physiological and pathological cases in couples of childbearing age (PUS).
  4. Apply maternity nursing care in physiological and pathological cases in couples of childbearing age.
  5. Implement maternity nursing care in physiological and pathological cases in Menopausal/Climacterium women.
  6. Implement maternity nursing care in physiological and pathological cases of gynecological disorders.

Vision of Pediatric Nursing

To become the best pediatric nursing department in north sumatra by producing students who are able to provide safe and effective nursing care for children in accordance with growth and development, both healthy and sick, integrated in the fields of education, community service and nursing research.

Mission of Pediatric Nursing

  1. Provide quality pediatric nursing education through learning activities, community service and pediatric nursing research.
  2. Provide a conducive environment for learning
  3. Provide facilities and infrastructure that support pediatric nursing.
  4. Improve scientific development through research and community service in the scope of pediatric nursing.

Goals of Pediatric Nursing

  1. Understand the basic concepts of providing safe and effective professional nursing care for neonates, infants, children and adolescents according to their level of growth and development both healthy and sick.
  2. Apply the theories, concepts and principles of pediatric nursing.
  3. Use the nursing process in acutely ill children
  4. Use the nursing process in chronically ill children.
  5. Use the nursing process in children with life-threatening illnesses.

Teaching Staff

Teaching according to the courses taught in the department, namely maternity nursing and pediatric nursing (Program B) both lectures and clinical clerks and courses taught outside the department, namely: Research, Obgyn, Documentation, Nursing Ethics, PDK, Health Education.

Making community service with the topic of immunization, baby massage, DDST (Child growth and development), breast milk corner and baby care.

Conduct pediatric maternity training and seminars.

4

Conduct nursing research with students and between lecturers.
